Erasmus CTRL+N: initating an annual ‘futures of learning’ festival at Erasmus University Rotterdam

Picture taken during CTRL+N 2023

We conceptualized and organized a new learning festival that showcases alternative ways of learning for sustainability. All the sessions have been developed under our guidance but created with full autonomy by both students from the Erasmus Honours Programme and professionals from different sectors. For universities this is radical: educational programmes are most often designed without involving the student voice. This way, we put the perspective of the student at the center stage. The event shows images of the desired future of the university according to bachelor students.

They explore questions such as: What should we learn (content), where should we learn (space), from whom and which perspectives, and finally: how should we learn (methods and formats). Their answers are presented in the form of “Teach-Ins”: immersive, action-oriented workshops that show - instead of tell. The Teach-Ins are attended by fellow students, teachers, learning innovators, policy makers, PhD students and other interested stakeholders.

Each year the event has a theme to reflect on a relevant development in higher education, for example digital learning, place-based learning and transformative learning. On average, there are about 200 participants per edition.
