CTRL+N 2020

The students tackled the most complex topics of society and blended them with radical and innovative teaching methods. They developed 12 masterclasses - called Teach-Ins - in which they dissect, reject, improve and reimagine current and future affairs. The Teach-Ins were presented on July 14 and 16 during the first annual Erasmus University: CTRL+N.

In each 2-hour online workshop, participants take a deep dive into transdisciplinary themes, with topics ranging from global inequalities to media domination and robot love. No lectures. No monologues. The Teach-Ins are fast-paced, creative, inspiring and fun - and are created for a generation that needs to change the world.

With over 300 registrations, this event was a big success. For more information about the programs, visit the EUR website.

The following Teach-Ins were developed:

AI Have a Dream

The world is changing faster than you could ever imagine: we can summon our cars, ask Alexa about the weather and we can unlock our phones with facial recognition. This has everything to do with artificial intelligence (AI). Like Stephen Hawking said, “AI will either be the best thing or the worst thing to happen to humanity.” So, what is it going to be?

One of the issues with AI is priming, when decisions are made based on wrong inputs. This could result in discrimination, racism and other social inequalities.

By means of an interactive game we will show you real life cases where artificial intelligence and priming are involved. Any prior knowledge is not required, ‘AI’ will lead you through the process!

Climate Change’s Death Threat: It’s Getting Hot in Here…

How do climate change, global health and inequality relate to each other? For instance: Are you currently suffering from allergy symptoms? If you aren’t now, maybe you will be next year… Not only does allergy seasons worsen each year, climate change also causes trees to produce pollen earlier every year and in a larger number. But this affects some people more than others, based on socioeconomic status, the region they live in and gender. Climate change seems to amplify the effect of those social
determinants on health inequalities. So not only is climate change worsening your health, it also increases related global inequalities, such as higher mortality rates in certain populations and the lack of access to necessary care.

Changing Diagnoses, a Closer Look at ADHD

In the Netherlands 2,9% of all children get diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and in the past ten years the use of ADHD medicine quadrupled. ADHD is just one example of a societal label. Why are we diagnosing - and are we diagnosing too much and limiting a child’s individuality in the process? Or do we need to diagnose more so children can get the specific help they need?

Having this diagnosis has many impacts on a child; it can influence their social life, health and education. What are the benefits and flaws of diagnoses, and what would improve the system?

See EU Later! European vs. National Identity

Could you imagine a world, singing the European anthem, proudly looking upon a European flag waving in triumph? Or does this seem like a dystopian future to you? We will shine a light on the circumstances that influence your identity. Do you associate yourself more with the national or European identity? Perhaps what you think is still to be contested. As contemporary crises show, the world and its history have not yet ended. The Hidden Language in a Multicultural Society

Did you know there are people from 200 different nationalities living in the Netherlands? Yet, getting to know other cultures seems to only remain on the surface. Only 7% of what we are saying is verbal communication, the rest is about tone, facial expressions and gestures. Not being able to recognize the emotional state of attitude of our interlocutor can make communication quite difficult. Have you ever thought what it would feel like integrating into another culture as a refugee or migrant?

There are many obstructions to multicultural integration. Signs of segregation are everywhere, simmering the tensions between people of distinct mother-tongues. With different backgrounds come different standards and communication styles. This Teach-In will offer you an original experience on all these topics
